The first mistake tends to be gluing onto plastic that has not been degreased: the veneer then only seems to hold and lifts at the corners after a few weeks. The second is rushing while taking the protective film off, when the piece sticks down crooked and tearing it away damages the surface of the wood. The third, less obvious mistake is the wrong orientation: the planks have to run on from the pieces around them in the right direction, otherwise the area reads as jarring even when it is laid perfectly. An honest dry fit takes care of all three at once.
The deck is broken up by barbettes and the bases of the superstructure, and it is around them that the quality of the work shows. Seat the pieces so that the cutouts settle without stretching the wood; where a small adjustment is needed somewhere, take material off the edge of the cutout in small steps and keep trying the fit. The gap between the veneer and the plastic part can be filled at the end with a thin layer of acrylic filler and painted over in the shade of the surrounding area.
The accessory is supplied separately; the kit, filler and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
