A supplementary set from the manufacturer Very Fire with four examples of the Arado Ar 196 shipboard floatplane in 1:350 scale. It is not an aircraft kit in the usual sense and not a ship model, but an accessory: the miniature aircraft are fitted to the catapults and deck areas of models of German warships, where the parts from the basic kit are necessarily simplified.
The Arado Ar 196 was a twin-float reconnaissance aircraft of the Kriegsmarine, launched by catapult from large surface ships and also used from coastal bases. It served for reconnaissance, maritime patrol and spotting; the crew consisted of a pilot and an observer. The aircraft was of metal construction with a low wing and two large floats, which gave it a characteristic silhouette. On ships it was carried folded or on the catapult, and after alighting on the water it was lifted back aboard by crane.
The parts are very small in 1:350 scale, so separate them with a sharp scalpel under a magnifier and work over a surface with a raised edge. Before painting, wash them in warm water with detergent and let them dry thoroughly, so that the paint holds. Apply a thin coat of primer; a heavy coat would flood the fine detail. The color scheme of naval aircraft tends to be dark on the upper surfaces and light underneath, and the transition is best suggested with a fine overspray. Glue the propellers and floats with cyanoacrylate glue in minute doses and watch the alignment of the floats, because asymmetry is immediately visible on a small model.
The set is an accessory, not a ship model in its own right. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
