1:350 House N°1 is a building for a harbor scene in 1:350 scale from the diorama range of the Black Dog brand.
Responsibility details are not available.
A structure meant to fill out a diorama in 1:350 scale. It is not a vessel or a part of one, but an element of the land that gives a ship model its connection with the shore. At this scale a display case tends to have a fixed area, so a free-standing house is often the quickest way to give a scene content without its growing over the edge of the base.
A building performs three tasks at once. It gives the viewer something to compare for scale, so that the length of the hull suddenly reads convincingly. It creates a backdrop for the eye to rest against, so that the scene does not end in emptiness. And finally it marks the land off against the water, the boundary on which the credibility of the whole setting rests. Placing it near the rear edge of the base works better than in the middle, because it leaves room for the water.
Start with a lighter undercoat, because at this scale a dark base would needlessly swallow the detail. Apply the base shade evenly, then pull a thinner dark paint down the vertical surfaces and let it run into the recesses. Make the roof areas differ more strongly than the walls; it is by them that the viewer reads the building. At the end come a gentle lightening of the edges and a matte varnish that evens out the differing sheen.
The base, the water and the ship are prepared by the modeler according to their own plan.
