This is neither a model of a ship nor a kit but a decal set for ship modelers. The SPACE line from the Czech firm Eduard consists of 3D printed decals with the color printed from the factory and with a raised layer, so that a door on the smooth wall of a superstructure does not look like mere artwork but has an edge and a shadow. The set suits models of Imperial Japanese Navy ships of the Second World War period in 1:350 scale.
Watertight doors are among the elements that repeat in dozens of pieces along the whole length of the superstructures on a ship model. In plastic they tend to be suggested only by shallow engraving, which almost disappears once the paint is sprayed, and it is exactly this inconspicuous detail that decides whether a large gray area of the side looks like a ship or like a bare block. The set replaces both bringing out the engraving by hand and gluing small photo-etched parts.
It is not difficult work but it is lengthy and demanding on patience. Count on tweezers with fine tips, good light and a magnifier. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, separate the elements one at a time only at the moment of gluing and seat them onto a smooth, clean and degreased surface; press them down with a damp cotton swab. Plan the placement in advance and keep a uniform height above the deck, otherwise any mismatch is glaring. Nothing is painted over. Once dry, the whole surface is evened out with a matte coat and only then do the washes and the weathering come in turn, which will give the doors depth.
This is an accessory for a kit, not a stand-alone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
