About product

What signal flags are for

International signal flags are the oldest means of communication at sea, and they work even when the radio is silent. Each flag carries one letter or numeral, and hoisted in order they make up a message. A flag hoisted on its own also has a settled meaning, so a single colored square on a line can convey a ship's whole situation. On a model these flags fill one more role: they break up the gray of the hull and the superstructure and give the scene the impression that something is going on aboard.

What the set offers

This set from the SPACE range brings colored flag elements in 1:350 scale, that is for the most widespread scale of larger ship models. The elements are rendered in color and carry even the small divisions of the flag field that would be hard to paint at this size. The extent of the sheet and the layout of the individual flags is given in the manufacturer's instructions.

How the elements are applied

Elements of the SPACE range are not dipped in water. Only the backing paper beneath them is moistened, with a damp sponge and a drop of detergent, and the element is lifted off it with tweezers. PVA glue (white glue) holds it in place. Do not use a decal softener. Proceed therefore as follows:

  • wash and degrease the surface and the rigging before applying
  • moisten the backing paper with a sponge and detergent; do not dip the element itself in water
  • lift the element off the paper with fine-pointed tweezers, as fingers are too coarse in 1:350 scale
  • press the edges down with a soft tool so that the flag does not lift
  • settle the flag into a drop of PVA glue; the manufacturer does not recommend cyanoacrylate glue

Ship models in 1:350 scale. The flags are not tied to one type of vessel, as the signal code is international.

With fine-pointed tweezers and with the position tried out in advance. Once stuck down, an element is hard to move at this scale.
