The paint Mr. Color Velvet Red Metallic is a special offshoot of the lacquer line of the Japanese maker Gunze. The metallic pigment in it is set so that the surface resembles velvet: the sheen changes noticeably according to the viewing angle and according to how light the surface underneath is. It comes in an 18 ml bottle.
Over a black base the result looks deepest and darkest, over a gray or white one brighter and livelier instead. This can be used deliberately, because a single paint can give several appearances depending on what lies under it. The effect stands out on smooth surfaces, while a rough surface breaks it up. It therefore pays to make a test sample on an offcut of plastic and only then choose the shade of the base.
It is aimed at models of cars and motorcycles, at fantasy armor and robot figures, where the surface is meant to behave differently from flat paintwork. It can also be used to imitate fabric with a deep pile, because a changeable sheen is exactly what is typical of velvet.
