This product is not a ship kit but an accessory for one. The wood veneer with pre-printed laying of the deck planks and an adhesive backing is glued straight onto the plastic deck of the model. Hikawa Maru is a Japanese ocean liner of the N.Y.K. line from the 1930s, that is, a civilian ship, on which a wooden deck carries especially great visual weight. The set is cut to the outline of one specific kit, the Hasegawa 40028.
A warship takes weathering and wear; on a passenger liner it is different. Promenade decks look convincing only when they are clean and even, so restraint pays off here. Leave the veneer in its natural shade or tone it only very gently, apply a wash in the seams at minimal strength and only where dirt would realistically collect. Accuracy at the edges is essential as well: long straight edges along the railings betray every deviation, so it is better to trim them on the model itself along the real edge of the deck than to guess in advance. Keep your hands clean, as a mark shows up immediately on light wood.
Degrease the plastic, let it dry and pull the film off in sections. Drive the air out to the edges with a soft cloth. The finished deck is best sealed with satin varnish, which gives the wood the discreet silky surface of a well-kept civilian ship.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit. The kit itself, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
