This set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard contains photo-etched parts for a model of the American large cruiser Alaska in 1:350 scale. Photo-etched parts are thin metal parts etched out of sheet which replace the elements that can only be rendered coarsely in plastic: railings, ladders, gratings, platforms and the fine structures of the superstructures. The part 2 designation means that this is the second part of a multi-part line for the same model. The individual parts complement each other, and the manufacturer also makes further ones for this cruiser.
The USS Alaska was the lead ship of the class of the same name of American large cruisers, completed at the close of the Second World War. These were exceptionally long vessels with a main gun armament of 12-inch caliber arranged in three turrets and with an extensive light armament distributed over the decks and superstructures. It is precisely the density of the small structures, railings and platforms that makes this type a rewarding target for completion with photo-etched parts.
Cut the parts off the fret on a hard surface with a sharp knife or with special pliers, and never tear them out. Make the bends in a bending tool or over the sharp edge of a ruler, always along the marked score line. They are glued with thin superglue applied with a pin, or else with low-melting solder on load-bearing parts. The metal is smooth, so always apply a primer to it. Fit the railings and ladders only onto a painted deck, otherwise you will flood them with paint while spraying. Work from the large surfaces to the small things and protect the finished areas, as photo-etched parts bend easily.
This is a photo-etched accessory to a model, not a kit of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
