A photo-etched set of thin metal sheet in 1:350 scale, intended for detailing a model of the American large cruiser USS Alaska. It is not a ship kit but an accessory. According to the name this is the third part of a series; there are three separate sets and each covers a different area of the model, so a complete rebuild usually needs more than one. Check which area of the ship this part deals with on the box.
USS Alaska carried the hull designation CB-1 and was the first ship of her class. These were large cruisers of the US Navy from the end of the Second World War, close to battleships in size but classified separately. The superstructures and above all the deck fittings, that is the railings, ladders, radar antennas and platforms, are precisely the elements that can only be made as a crude substitute in plastic. Etch is the natural solution for them, because it reproduces a thickness matching the real material at scale.
Cut the sheet parts out on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel or special scissors, not by twisting, so that the rest of the fret is not bent. Longer straight bends can only be done properly with an etch bending tool; without one the result shows on a model this large. They are bonded with super glue applied in a minimal amount, and on larger parts the slower gel version is useful as well, as it gives time to seat them. Degrease the etch before painting and spray a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth metal and will be rubbed off during assembly. Paint railings and ladders while they are still on the fret and fit them only once the deck is finished.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
