The deck is made of real wood and the gaps between the planks are formed by a cut, not by engraving into plastic, so they have the right width in scale and do not look coarse. Once it is laid down, the model gains a texture and a color tone that are hard to achieve by painting plastic. It is an accessory for a kit, not a model of the ship.
USS Massachusetts BB-59 was a battleship of the South Dakota class taken into service in 1942. She carried nine 406 mm guns in three turrets and heavy anti-aircraft armament. She first saw combat in November 1942 off Casablanca during the landings in North Africa, and later operated in the Pacific supporting landings and attacks on Japanese positions. She came through the war and since 1965 has been a museum ship at Fall River in Massachusetts, so she is among the well-documented subjects with photographic documentation available.
First lay the deck on dry and check that it lines up with the openings for the superstructures, the turrets and the deck equipment. The base has to be clean, degreased and painted in a dark shade, so that plastic showing through does not make itself felt in the gaps between the planks. If the veneer has a self-adhesive layer, peel the backing film off gradually from one edge, lay the part from the center toward the edges and press it down with a soft roller or with a finger through paper; otherwise use a thin layer of contact or PVA glue. Separate small pieces with a sharp, new knife, and do not pull or bend the veneer. Once it is laid down the surface can be gently toned with oil paints or pastel and fixed with matte varnish in light coats; a heavy coat of varnish will fill the wood grain and the effect will disappear.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
