A wooden deck in 1:350 scale from Pontos Model for a model of the American aircraft carrier USS Essex, in the treatment designated as type 1. On an aircraft carrier the deck is the largest visible area of the whole model, so its surface decides the final impression more than on other ships. Real wood with cut gaps gives the area a texture and a depth that are hard to achieve by painting plastic. It is an accessory for a kit, not a model of the ship.
USS Essex CV-9 was the first unit of the class of aircraft carriers of the same name, taken into service at the end of 1942. The Essex class formed the backbone of American carrier aviation in the Pacific and its ships took part in practically all the major operations of the end of the war. The Essex herself was hit in November 1944 in an attack by a suicide aircraft and after repair returned to the fighting. After the war she went through an extensive modernization that changed the form of the island and the flight deck, and she remained in service until 1969.
First lay the deck on dry and check that it lines up with the openings for the superstructures, the turrets and the deck equipment. The base has to be clean, degreased and painted in a dark shade, so that plastic showing through does not make itself felt in the gaps between the planks. If the veneer has a self-adhesive layer, peel the backing film off gradually from one edge, lay the part from the center toward the edges and press it down with a soft roller or with a finger through paper; otherwise use a thin layer of contact or PVA glue. Separate small pieces with a sharp, new knife, and do not pull or bend the veneer. Once it is laid down the surface can be gently toned with oil paints or pastel and fixed with matte varnish in light coats; a heavy coat of varnish will fill the wood grain and the effect will disappear.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
