Injection-molded plastic kit of the American guided-missile destroyer USS Hopper (DDG-70) in 1:350 scale from Trumpeter. The Hopper belongs to the first production series (Flight I) of the Arleigh Burke class, with a 127 mm gun mount. The hull is split, so the model can be built either as a full hull on a stand or as a waterline version; the box usually holds photo-etched parts for the railings and fine details, plus clear parts. The Arleigh Burke is the most numerous class of guided-missile destroyers in the US Navy, built around the Aegis combat system with vertical launch cells for guided missiles. USS Hopper is named after Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, a pioneer of computing and programming, nicknamed Amazing Grace. She is one of the few US Navy ships to carry a woman's name; her home port is Pearl Harbor.
Decide in advance on the full-hull or the waterline version. Paint and highlight the deck and the superstructures before final assembly, and fit the fine photo-etched railings, radars and antennas with cyanoacrylate glue. Tie the whole together with a primer and spray it with an airbrush in shades of naval gray, pick out the engraved and panel lines with a dark wash and add weathering in keeping with service at sea.
