About product

USS Iowa BB-61 part 1 — photo-etched set in 1:350 scale

Ship models have one weakness that plastic cannot get around: railings, ladders, gratings and radar screens have to be many times thicker in the mold than the real thing. Photo-etching solves that problem. This set from the Czech maker Eduard is intended for the model of the battleship USS Iowa in 1:350 scale and is marked as the first part, because the etching for a ship of that size will not fit on a single fret. Further separate parts follow on from it.

What is worth knowing in advance

Working with etching calls for patience, a sharp knife, tweezers and a photo-etch bending tool, or at least two straight jaws. The reward is correct scale thickness of the parts, and nothing else can substitute for that.

The real subject

USS Iowa was the first ship of the class of fast battleships of the same name in the US Navy. She entered service in 1943 and combined heavy armament of nine 406 mm guns in three turrets with a speed that battleships of that size had not reached until then. In World War II she served in the Atlantic and in the Pacific, later went through the Korean War, and in the 1980s she was returned to service with modern missile armament. Today she is a museum ship.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts from the fret on a hard surface, never tear them out. Make each bend in one operation and along its whole length so the metal does not ripple. Etching is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and fine joints will even take soldering. A primer is essential before painting, because paint holds poorly on bare brass. Fit the railings at the very end of the build so they do not get bent while you handle the model.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the battleship USS Iowa in 1:350 scale
  • experienced modelers with photo-etching under their belt
  • anyone interested in contest and display ship models
  • those who want to detail the model part by part

The set is an add-on for a plastic kit and does not contain the ship model itself.

FAQ

The etching for a ship that large will not fit on a single fret. Eduard therefore offers it as several separately sold parts that complement each other.

A sharp knife, tweezers and a hard surface will do, but a photo-etch bending tool makes the work much easier. Make bends in one operation along the whole length of the part.

Degrease it first, then lay down a primer and only then the paint. Paint bonds poorly to bare brass and rubs off when the model is handled.

She combined nine 406 mm guns with high speed. She served in World War II, in Korea and, after a modernization, in the 1980s.
