About product

USS Iowa BB-61 part 2 — the photo-etched set in 1:350 scale continues

Detailing a large battleship is work for long evenings, and Eduard has matched the way it is sold to that: the etching for the USS Iowa model in 1:350 scale is split into several separate parts. This fret is the second of them. It can be had on its own, or you can add the parts one after another and spread the work out into stages.

Why photo-etching

Injected plastic has a technological minimum thickness. Railings, ladders or radar screens therefore always look coarse on a model. Etched sheet is thinner by an order of magnitude and, once painted, looks more convincing in a photograph and under a magnifier than any plastic part.

The real subject

Iowa entered service in 1943 as the lead ship of a new class of fast battleships. She carried nine 406 mm guns in three turrets and, thanks to a powerful machinery plant, she could keep up with the aircraft carriers, which made her a valuable escort for the task forces. She went through both main theaters of World War II, then Korea, and in the 1980s one more modernization, after which she also carried guided missiles. Her long service is also the reason modelers build Iowa in so many guises.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts by cutting, not by twisting, and put them straight into a dish so they do not get lost. A photo-etch bending tool handles the longer bends, two tweezer jaws the short ones. Glue the joints with a small amount of cyanoacrylate glue; on etching the excess is very hard to remove. A primer is a must. Fit railings and antennas last, ideally once the deck is finished and weathered, because they are the most vulnerable.

Who the set is for

  • modelers who already have the first part of the etching
  • builders of Iowa in 1:350 scale with photo-etching experience
  • anyone interested in detailing a larger model step by step
  • display and contest ship model builds

An add-on for a plastic kit; neither the ship model nor the other parts of the etching are included in the package.

FAQ

You do not, each fret is sold separately. The parts do complement each other, though, so the model will look more of a piece if you use them together.

At the end of the build, once the deck is finished and weathered. Any further handling bends or snaps them off easily.

Apply cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest possible amount, ideally with the tip of a wire. Excess is very hard to get off fine etching.

She entered service in 1943, went through World War II and Korea, and in the 1980s she was returned to service after a modernization.
