The plastic kit of the aircraft carrier USS Midway belongs among the truly large projects. The real ship measured over 290 meters, so even after the reduction into 1:350 scale the model stays sizeable, and before the build it pays to think out where you will put it. Trumpeter is a maker known precisely for large ship kits. The build is demanding by its extent rather than by the individual steps, so it rewards patience.
The USS Midway was the first unit of the class of the same name, the largest aircraft carriers the United States laid down during the Second World War. She entered service in September 1945, that is only after the fighting had ended, and she became the first American ship with an armored flight deck. Over almost half a century of service she went through several fundamental rebuilds, which gave her an angled deck and steam catapults and kept her in step with jet aircraft. She was deployed in Vietnam and in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and since 2004 she has served in San Diego as a museum ship.
Decide first whether you want the full hull or whether to cut the underwater part away and build the model as a waterline version; that simplifies the build. Spray the extensive areas of the deck with an airbrush and divide the shades according to the individual sections, or they look dead. Railings, nets and cranes from photo-etched accessories will do more for credibility than anything else. Support the hull along its whole length while it dries, so that it does not bend.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
