A photo-etched set for the USS Nimitz CVN-68 aircraft carrier in 1:350 scale from Eduard, the fifth part of a multi-part series. It is an accessory for a kit, not a model of the ship.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set holds photo-etched parts for refining a model of the American aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in 1:350 scale. It is not a model of the ship but an accessory for a plastic kit. Eduard covers this ship with a whole series of connected sets; part five is one of them and it complements the others rather than replacing them. It is a full photo-etched set, not a reduced variant of the Zoom type.
Photo-etch deals with what injection-molded plastic cannot manage in 1:350 scale: thin-walled gratings, railings, platforms, ladders, radar antennas and other elements that should have a real thickness of a few tenths of a millimeter. On an aircraft carrier of this size there are exceptionally many such places, which is why Eduard divides the sets into parts, so that a modeler can buy them piece by piece according to what he is actually finishing on the model.
For work with photo-etch, have a flat support, a sharp knife or shears for etch and a bending tool ready. Cut the parts off, do not tear them. They are bonded with super glue applied in a minimal amount, ideally with a toothpick or a piece of wire; surplus glue shows on shiny metal. Degrease the etch before painting and spray on a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on metal. Fit the railings only once the deck finish is done, because otherwise you cannot reach the surface between them with a brush or an airbrush. Work in sections and always let the finished parts cure, because a bent railing is very hard to straighten afterwards.
