An extensive detailing set from the manufacturer Very Fire intended for its own kit of the heavy cruiser USS Salem CA-139 in 1:350 scale. It is not a ship model but an accessory: the set replaces and supplements the parts of the basic kit where injected plastic cannot keep to the thickness and fineness of the real thing. Without the corresponding kit it cannot be used.
The USS Salem was a heavy cruiser of the Des Moines class, completed shortly after the Second World War. Ships of this class carried 203 mm guns with automatic loading, thanks to which they had a markedly higher rate of fire than older heavy cruisers, and they were among the largest gun cruisers of all. The Salem served in the Mediterranean among other places and today she is preserved as a museum ship, which makes her one of the few subjects where details can be checked against the real vessel. That is exactly why the model is often built with an emphasis on the accuracy of the deck fittings.
A detailing set is worked in as you go, not at the end of a build. Work out in advance which plastic parts have to be removed before you glue the hull and the superstructures together. Bend the photo-etched parts on a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is crisp and even, and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue applied in small doses with a piece of wire. Degrease and prime the metal parts before painting, otherwise the paint will come off during handling. Fit the railings, ladders and antennas only after the deck and the hull have been painted. Work over a surface with a raised edge, as small parts like to spring away, and count on a build with a detailing set taking considerably more time than a build from the basic package.
The set is an accessory, not a model in its own right. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
