A set of waterslide decals with the lettering for tire sidewalls for models in 1:12 scale. The lettering is rendered in the yellow color that the soft compounds of racing tires carried. According to the manufacturer each letter is designed as a separate segment, so the curve of the sidewall can be followed better than with one long piece of lettering. The decals are supplied without a clear coat.
On models in a large scale a wheel is one of the most conspicuous parts of the whole model. A bare black tire sidewall looks empty and takes scale away from the car, whereas the lettering breaks the area up visually and tells you at once what kind of tire it is. Dividing it into individual letters also allows the lettering to be matched to the diameter of a particular wheel.
Rubber is a thankless ground for decals, because it is matte, flexible and tends to be greasy from plasticizers. So wash and degrease the tire sidewall and apply a narrow band of gloss varnish to it. Lay the letters down one at a time and keep measuring the distance from the edge, or the lettering will run off into a spiral. Dose the softener carefully, as on rubber it can draw the film in. Finally fix the finished lettering with matte varnish.
