The Polo R WRC was the first car with which Volkswagen entered the world rally championship. It was based on a small production hatchback, but under that body hid the top engineering of the day: a turbocharged gasoline engine of 1.6 liters with the mandatory restrictor, four-wheel drive, a sequential gearbox and well-worked aerodynamic equipment. The arrival was extraordinarily convincing, as Sebastien Ogier took the drivers' world title in the very first year and the brand also dominated the manufacturers' standings.
