A title from the Ultra Detail Guide series, which the Japanese studio Komakai publishes. It is devoted to a single car, the McLaren MP4/13 Formula 1 single-seater. It is not a kit but a publication a modeler draws on when building and finishing a model of this car.
The MP4/13 raced in the 1998 season, the first year after a fundamental change of rules: the cars became narrower and for the first time had to start on tires with longitudinal grooves. McLaren responded to that change better than anyone on the grid and left its rivals far behind in the opening race at Melbourne. The car was created under the designer Adrian Newey, it was powered by a Mercedes-Benz V10 and it stood on Bridgestone tires. Mika Häkkinen took his first world title with it, David Coulthard drove as the second driver and the constructors' cup was left to the team as well. The car at first also included a solution for braking the inner rear wheel, which the opposition challenged and which was banned during the year.
The silver formula car of 1998 stands and falls on the accuracy of small things: the shape of the front wing, the routing of the suspension links and the division of the sidepods. A title focused on a single car puts these things in context better than a general yearbook of the season.
