A title from the Ultra Detail Guide series of the publisher Komakai. The designation type 49 refers to the Lotus 49 Formula 1 single-seater of the late 1960s. It is a publication for modelers, not a kit and not a set of parts.
The Lotus 49 is among the most important single-seaters ever created. It was the first car with the Ford Cosworth DFV V8 and above all the first to use the engine as a structural member: the monocoque ended behind the driver's back, the engine was bolted to it and the rear suspension was then mounted directly on it. Formula 1 took this principle over for the next twenty years and it is still the starting point today. The debut went like a fairy tale, as Jim Clark won the very first race with the car at Zandvoort in 1967. In the following years the single-seater went through modifications, among them the first aerodynamic wings ever to appear in Formula 1. Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe stood behind the design, and the build of the car was based on an aluminum monocoque.
The 1960s mean exposed engineering: the exhaust headers, the rockers, the tanks and the steering links are all visible. Reference material concentrated on a single car helps bring into line the shapes and placement of small parts that would otherwise hold up a build.
