Few shades are as firmly tied to a single driver. In American oval racing this light blue became the mark of Richard Petty's cars and the crowd recognized it sooner than the racing number on the door. That is exactly why a name taken straight from the family name stuck to it.
According to an often repeated story it came about by accident, when there was not enough of one paint left in the shop and the mechanics mixed the leftovers together. The tone caught on and the family stable stayed with it for decades. Petty raced a car marked with the number forty-three, gathered a record number of wins in the top American series and took seven overall titles. From the early 1970s a bold red panel of the main partner joined the blue, so the car carried two colors divided by a sharp break. Anyone building one of the stable's later cars needs both, because the proportion of the areas shifted from season to season.
It is aimed at builders of American racing models, for whom the usual palettes do not offer a matching tone. The shade is tied to the driver, not to the maker of the car, so it will serve across the generations of his machinery. For a build the era is what decides: the stable's older cars carried blue over almost the whole body, and after the red panel of the main partner arrived there was less of it. The proportion of the two colors also shifted from season to season, so it pays to keep photographs of the particular car at hand.
