Fairlady 240Z Rally Red is the red of the Datsun rally coupes that conquered the East African Safari Rally in the 1970s.
Responsibility details are not available.
The rally versions of the Japanese coupe carried a bold red body that could be seen at a great distance in the dust of the East African stages. The shade aims exactly at these cars, that is at the rally form rather than at the ordinary palette of the road coupe. The color on them had to survive long legs in heat and dust, so it looked raw rather than deeply glossy.
The car known on the home market as the Fairlady 240Z and in export as the Datsun 240Z arrived at the beginning of the 1970s with a long hood, an inline six-cylinder of 2.4 liters and a fairly low weight. The combination of a stiff structure and uncomplicated engineering made it a car that coped even with the exceptionally demanding East African Safari Rally, and it won it twice within three editions. For the Japanese brand that was a breakthrough which opened the doors to western markets. Thanks to those successes the coupe became a collector classic at home and overseas, and the modeling range reflects that to this day.
For builders of classic rally cars who want a color documented by a particular entry rather than only guessed from a photograph. On the rally coupes the red was joined by a white field with the race number and by dark fender flares scuffed by African dust.
