Superleggera Red is a red shade from the Number Five line. The word superleggera means lightened in Italian and marks a way of building a body that later found its way into the names of the automobiles themselves as a sign of lightness and exclusivity.
The original Superleggera technique came about in Milan in the 1930s. It consisted in stretching aluminum sheet over a thin-walled tubular skeleton that followed the shape of the body. The result was markedly lighter than the period construction of a wooden frame and steel, and it was used on sports and touring cars alike. Modern makers revived the name on the lightened versions of their models, and red has belonged to that tradition since time immemorial, as it is the color Italian cars started in at international events. The shade therefore does not aim at one particular model but at that whole circle of cars.
The paint will be put to use by builders of car models who want a red from an Italian setting, and by modelers who get on with a ready named shade from a line. The coachworks that patented the technique in the middle of the 1930s bore the name Touring. Because the name in this case does not set a single car, the shade also suits where a builder is looking for a more universal deep red with a period ring to it.
