Zakspeed Black is a black shade from the Number 5 brand, whose paints carry the names of automotive paints. Black is versatile on a model: it covers bodies, frames, interiors and small parts, and it also serves as a base under metallic shades. The paint is mixed ready to use, so there is no hunting for a mixing ratio and topping a coat up later comes out in the same tone.
Stir the contents of the jar thoroughly first, as settled pigment changes both the coverage and the finished surface. It can be applied with an airbrush as well as a brush, and the thinner and the thinning ratio are given in the manufacturer's instructions. Work in two or three thin coats and let the surface flash off between them. A heavy coat saves nothing with black, it only floods the engraved panel gaps and lengthens the drying.
A black surface swallows shape and a model looks flatter on it than it really is. Pick the edges and panel gaps out after drying with a darker or, conversely, a lighter line, otherwise the detail will disappear in a photograph. Black also shows every speck of dust and every fingerprint, so put the model under a box after spraying and handle it in gloves or by the parts that are not seen. Close the jar as soon as you have taken paint out and wipe the rim.
