Magnesium Gold is a metallic shade from Number Five capturing the warm golden surface of magnesium castings and racing rims.
Responsibility details are not available.
A metallic shade named after the magnesium components that appear in sporting machinery everywhere every gram of weight matters. Magnesium alloys are given a protective layer because of their susceptibility to corrosion, and that gives them the characteristic warm surface shifted toward gold that neither silver aluminum nor brass has.
The most conspicuous are the rims of racing wheels: their golden tone belongs among the marks of recognition of the sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s and it holds to this day on retro forms. Gearbox cases, timing covers, oil pans, wheel hubs and parts of motorcycle frames were cast from magnesium as well. Against polished aluminum a magnesium surface has a different nature: it does not mirror its surroundings, it is flatter and it shows through with warmth rather than with gloss. It is exactly this difference that sets a faithfully painted racing chassis apart from a uniform silver surface.
It will be appreciated by builders of racing cars and motorcycles who want a legible difference between the individual metals beneath a body. When all the castings on a chassis are in the same silver tone, a model flattens; a warm magnesium shade beside cool steel makes an engine bay into a scene where there is something to read.
