Tail reinforcement plates for the Hornet in 1:32 scale are three-dimensional elements for the F/A-18A, B, C and D versions, usable on the commonly available kits of this aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The accessory aims at one particular detail that tends to be passed over on finished Hornet models: the additional plates around the roots of the vertical tails. The elements are placed on a finished surface and give it the raised transition the real machine has. According to the name they are reckoned for the common kits of this type, not for one particular tooling.
The Hornet has two canted tails, which are struck by the vortex that forms on the leading edge extensions of the wing. It was that loading which in service led to fatigue cracks and to additional strengthening of the root area. Machines of versions A to D therefore carry doublers in this place, which are clearly visible in photographs and hard to suggest on a model by engraving.
It is practical to spray the tails before the whole airframe is assembled, because you reach them more easily. Cut the elements out with a small margin and lay them on dry so that you know exactly where they belong. Only then seat them according to the instructions and leave the surface in peace to set.
The loading of the tails was tackled from the other side as well. On the leading edge extensions of the wing the Hornet received small vertical fences, which straightened the vortex before it reached the tail. A builder who adds plates at the roots of the fins should therefore also check the shape of the extensions, so that the model matches one period of service.
