A plaque 25 mm in size with the badge of the mountain division known as Handschar. It does not concern the model; it is a diorama accessory: a label with which a finished scene, the base of a figure or a shelf in a display case is marked. The byname Handschar is given directly in the name and refers to the curved saber the unit was named after. The smaller size suits single figures, the larger 40 mm variant more extensive scenes.
The division was raised in 1943 and filled up mainly from Bosnian Muslims; it is given as the first Waffen-SS formation that was not made up of German and so-called Germanic personnel. It was committed in the Balkans, where it operated against partisan formations in broken mountain terrain. Its equipment included headgear different from ordinary German practice, which makes it a rewarding subject for figure modelers. The unit broke up during the withdrawal fighting of 1945.
Balkan subjects tend to be dusty and stony, so a scene often ends up in gray-brown tones. So that the plaque is not lost in them, put a darker border beneath it and leave the badge lighter than its surroundings. Apply pigment to the scene only after the label is settled and cover the edge of the plaque with masking tape while you work. Bring out the detail of the badge with a dry brush as the last step.
