The F-35C Lightning II is the carrier-based version of the fifth-generation multirole combat aircraft. It differs from the land-based variant in its larger wing area with folding tips, strengthened landing gear and an arrestor hook, that is in everything the machine needs for a catapult launch and for arrest on the deck of an aircraft carrier. Its cockpit is among the most modern of all: a large-area screen has replaced the classic instruments in it.
The package carries a colored interior created by 3D printing. The items have three-dimensional relief and finished colors, so the cockpit gains an appearance that hand painting of tiny details would take a long time and a lot of trouble to achieve. The set is worked out for the F-35C kit in 1:72 scale from the Italeri brand. The extent of the items and their placing in the cockpit is shown by the maker's instructions.
The items are printed on carrier decal paper and have no adhesive layer of their own. The mention of decal paper in the name therefore holds literally: cut the part out, soak it in lukewarm water for about fifteen seconds and slide it off the paper into place. First paint the area in the cockpit, let it dry, rid it of dust and grease and coat it with a gloss varnish of the Future, Klear or Tamiya X-22 type, on which the item will take hold; on a broken-up surface a drop of super glue helps. Do not use a decal softener or a setting solution; their chemistry damages printed resin. Press the seated item down with a soft tool, so that it beds in even in the hollows.
The set suits modelers who want the cockpit finished quickly and convincingly nonetheless. In 1:72 scale it is the easiest way to keep an empty area from showing through the glazing. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
