This kit of the ZIS-155 city bus in 1:43 scale from AVD Models is aimed at collectors who want public transport vehicles on the shelf too, not only trucks and off-road vehicles. Of the whole Soviet bus output the ZIS-155 is one of the most easily recognized types, and in 1:43 scale period passenger cars and flatbeds from the same era show well beside it. The maker concentrates on exactly this field of vehicles, and its range in this scale is unusually wide.
The ZIS-155 was built by the Moscow ZIS works from the end of the 1940s and replaced the more costly and less reliable ZIS-154 type. In its engineering it drew on the running units of the ZIS-150 truck, which assured it readily available spare parts and simple maintenance, exactly what post-war city transport needed most. With its distinctive rounded front and wide doors, the vehicle was part of the basic equipment of city transport undertakings and lasted on the streets of the large cities until more modern types took over.
The rounded front is the identifying mark of this type and deserves attention. Check the transition between the front and the sides and level any gap before you start painting, because every irregularity shows on a gloss surface. Buses of the period usually had a gloss or semi-gloss finish, so it pays to spray in thin coats and let each one dry properly. The chrome trim strips and window frames come out better with a metallic paint applied with a sharp-pointed brush than with a paste. The weathering should stay restrained, as city buses were washed.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
