The Vickers class S was a British aviation cannon of 40 mm caliber from the time of the Second World War. It came into being for attacks on ground targets that machine-gun fire was not enough for, that is, against armored vehicles, trucks and supply columns. The weapon was hung under the wing in an aerodynamic pod, one under each half of the wing, and a drum magazine fed it with rounds. It was carried above all by the anti-tank versions of the Hawker Hurricane fighter, which proved themselves in North Africa and later in Burma. Joining a slower but well-handling aircraft with a large-caliber weapon gave the pilot only a few rounds per pass, but with an effect that ordinary onboard armament did not have.
The cannon in 1:48 scale as a replacement for or a completion of the armament of a model. The extent of the parts, that is, whether the pod and the underwing mounting are included, is described in the maker's instructions.
The parts are not of polystyrene and ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on them; use cyanoacrylate glue. Cut excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder down carefully, so that the cylindrical shape of the barrel is preserved. Wash and degrease the parts before painting, or the paint will hold badly. Fit the weapon along the axis of the aircraft and check it from a distance and from behind, because misaligned stores are visible on a finished model sooner than anything else. The barrels suit a dark steel shade, fine accentuation of the edges and only hinted traces of propellant residue at the muzzle.
