About product

Stencils for the glazing of the early Skyhawk in 1:48

The set serves for the accurate covering of the clear areas of the single-seat Douglas A-4B and A-4C in forty-eighth scale. The double sided attribute in the name describes the form for both sides of the glazing: the frames are covered from outside and from inside, so that the inside of the cockpit can get its own shade and the outer surface the final camouflage, without the finishes showing through to each other across the clear part. The kits to whose shape the set is cut are given directly in the name of the item.

How the B and C versions differ

The Skyhawk was designed by the team around Ed Heinemann as a deliberately small carrier attack aircraft whose delta wing fitted onto a ship's elevator without folding tips. That saved weight, mechanism and room in the hangar, and the machine was therefore built for over twenty years. The A-4B version brought an in-flight refueling probe and strengthened rudder controls, and the A-4C added equipment for flight at low altitude in poor visibility; from outside it gives itself away by a lengthened nose. Both machines flew with the US Navy and with the Marine Corps and later reached a number of foreign users.

What to watch on the Skyhawk canopy

The sliding canopy sits very tightly on the low fuselage and its frames are narrow, so trimming by hand with tape usually turns out smudged here. Lay the stencils on perfectly degreased and dry glass, press them down with a wooden stick from the center to the edges and lead the paint in thin coats square to the edge of the frame, so that it does not run under it. Spray the inner frames before you seat the canopy on the fuselage; later you will no longer reach them.

Who the set suits

  • Builders of the early version of the Skyhawk in forty-eighth scale
  • Those who want the frames drawn out when looking into the pilot's compartment as well
  • Modelers for whom trimming tape by hand took up time
  • Collectors of Cold War carrier attack aircraft

FAQ

That the set contains pieces for covering the frames from both sides of the clear part. The inner side is masked before the canopy is seated on the fuselage, the outer side only at the final camouflage.

The shape is derived from the canopy of the A-4B and A-4C versions. Later versions have the glazing divided differently, so it will not fit them exactly.

Several very thin passes are better than one dense coat. A heavy coat creates a conspicuous step at the edge of the frame once the stencil is taken off.
