1:48 A6M2-N Optical Illusion Control Surfaces is a set of control surface and flap masks for a model of the A6M2-N floatplane fighter in 1:48 scale. The sprayed shadow creates the impression of deflected surfaces. Intended for the Eduard kit.

The set serves to spray shadows along the dividing lines of the control surfaces and flaps. It is an optical illusion effect, not a modification of the parts. The surfaces of the model stay fixed and in one plane; they will merely look separate and slightly deflected when seen in a display case. The target kit is Eduard.
The eye judges shape by shadow. On a real aircraft a narrow dark stripe arises along the gap between the fixed surface and the control surface, and it is that which the eye reads as a gap and the start of a deflection. When such a shadow is sprayed through a mask in a shade darker than the surrounding finish, the brain supplies the rest. The effect is strongest in a photograph and when the display case is viewed from a normal distance. It is worth knowing what the set does not do: the control surfaces cannot genuinely be deflected with it, which would require cutting the parts off and gluing them back on.
The effect is sprayed only onto a finished base coat, ideally before the matte varnish. Mix a shade noticeably darker than the surrounding color and lay it on really thinly, in gentle bursts. A heavy coat kills the illusion, because it turns into a conspicuous stripe instead of a shadow. Press the masks down along the whole line so that the paint cannot creep under them, and lift them off before the varnish cures. The subject is the floatplane fighter derived from the carrier-borne A6M2 type, on which the flying surfaces are clearly visible from above and from the side.
