Masks for spraying the tail codes and additional markings of Japanese A6M2 carrier fighters in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
Japanese carrier fighters carried neither crew names nor colorful noses, but they did have a strictly laid-down system of markings on the vertical tail. A letter with numerals said which unit and which ship the aircraft belonged to, and stripes around the fuselage or across the tail surface went with them. For the modeler that means a great deal: it is these small things that tell one A6M2 from another far more clearly than the shade of the green or gray paint.
The stencils mark out the tail markings and the additional lettering of the aircraft of the December 1941 strike. Spraying has an advantage over a decal that cannot be made up: the marking follows the shape of the fin and the ripple of the panels, and nowhere does it leave the glossy skin of a carrier film that would have to be tamed with softener and flat varnish.
Small markings are sprayed at low pressure with the gun close to the surface. Try the settings out on a scrap of plastic first. A mist that vanishes on a large area can blur the whole outline of a letter two millimeters high. So cover the rest of the model with paper, not just with a narrow strip of tape.
Before you reach for a stencil, go through the photographs of the particular aircraft. The layout of the code on the tail surface changed over a few short weeks, and the same aircraft could look different in January than it had in December. Time spent over the references shows in the result more than a perfectly mastered spraying technique.
If you do not trust your hand, start with the least conspicuous surface. Once that comes out right, you will go at the rest with a calm mind.
