Landing gear bay masks for the Mitsubishi A6M3 model 22 and A6M5 model 52 in 1:48 scale cover the inside of the bay so that it is not fouled by the top coat of the airframe.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of pre-cut masks for the inside of the landing gear bays. It is not a canopy mask: it closes off the openings in the lower surface of the wing once the bay is finished, so that the top coat of the airframe cannot foul it.
Why bays are masked
On most aircraft the inside of a bay has a different shade from the outer surface and it tends to be one of the first things sprayed. When the airframe is then sprayed with the camouflage finish, the mist flies into an open bay and blurs the boundary. A pre-cut mask closes the opening exactly along the edge, so the transition stays clean and the bay keeps its own shade.
The order in which the work is done
First spray and, if you wish, weather the inside of the bays. Let the paint cure properly; a mask will pull a fresh coat off. Then insert the mask into the opening and press it down all the way around; in the depth of the part a blunt toothpick helps, as you cannot reach there with a finger. Only then spray the airframe. Take the mask off before you start with the gloss varnish under the decals, so that no step builds up around it.
The model 22 and the model 52 are two of the later variants of the Mitsubishi A6M carrier fighter. On Japanese naval aircraft the interior spaces, the landing gear bays included, tended to be protected by a different anti-corrosion finish, so the boundary between the bay and the outer paint is clearly visible on a model and it pays to make it crisp.
