The real subject

The M10 Gun Motor Carriage was an American tank destroyer of the Second World War, built on the chassis of the M4 medium tank. Its main weapon was a 76.2 mm gun mounted in an open five-sided turret with a counterweight at the rear. The open turret roof is what matters for a modeler: the fighting compartment is clearly visible on a finished model, so empty stowage bins look distracting and added ammunition makes a visible difference.

Building and painting tips

Wash the small castings first in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry out properly - remains of mold release agent are the main reason why paint does not hold on accessories. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp cutter or a modeling saw right at the part, and never break them off. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate), not with cement for plastic. Painting is handled by a fine primer base and then two different areas: the case in a brass or similar metallic shade and the projectile in matte olive. A light dark wash settles the rounds into the shadows, and a final polish with graphite dust gives the cases a metallic sheen.
