About product

AN/ALE-39 and AN/ALE-47 - flare dispensers 1:48 (Brengun)

A resin detail accessory in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Brengun. It is not a model of an aircraft, but a set of small parts with which you replace or complete the simplified parts of a base kit. The set depicts flare dispensers of the AN/ALE-39 and AN/ALE-47 types in the release used by the US Navy and Marine Corps. Before buying, compare the shape and position of the dispensers on your model; the number of parts in the package is given on the packaging.

The real subject

Flare dispensers are an element of an aircraft's passive defense. They fire chaff, which confuses radar, and flares, whose heat signature draws away seeker heads reacting to infrared radiation. The AN/ALE-39 is an older system with a fixed cartridge load, the AN/ALE-47 is a newer programmable set in which the sequence and the kind of countermeasures fired are chosen according to the situation. The installation tends to be in panels on the underside of the fuselage or in pods, and the number and arrangement differ from type to type as well as according to the particular modification of a machine.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in warm water with a drop of dish soap, so that they are rid of mold release agent residue - otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a thin cutting disc and do not break them off; when sanding resin, protect your breathing and sand wet, because the dust is fine and irritating. They are attached with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally a gel one, which gives time to align the part. Apply a thin layer of primer before painting; the cartridges themselves usually differ from the surrounding surface in shade and in being somewhat less dusty than the skin of the aircraft.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of US Navy carrier aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers for whom the simplified parts from a base kit are not enough
  • Those interested in modern aircraft passive defense systems
  • More experienced modelers used to working with resin and cyanoacrylate glue

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a detail accessory - a set of small parts with which you improve a kit in 1:48 scale that you have already bought.

The parts depict the real equipment of an aircraft, so what it fits is given by the shape and position of the dispensers on your model - compare them before buying.

Cyanoacrylate glue, that is, super glue. Ordinary cement for plastic does not bite into resin and the joint will not hold.

Yes. Wash them in lukewarm water with dish soap, so that the mold release agent residue disappears, and only then apply primer and paint.
