Animals are among the most effective additions to a rural scene. A few hens between the ruts of a track or at the threshold of a house say at once that the place is inhabited and that life has not stopped. The animal series offers exactly that kind of detail in 1:48 scale, a size where the shape is already clearly visible but the work stays quick.
It looks best where the viewer would expect it: by the dung heap, under a cart, around scattered grain or in the shade of a wall. Avoid even spacing; real flocks gather unevenly. Turn one figure with its head toward the edge of the base and the scene gains movement, because the eye follows the direction of its gaze. Two poultry close together suggest they are squabbling over a grain.
With shapes this small it is contrast that decides, not the number of shades. White, ocher and brown will do, plus a darker glaze into the recesses and a light highlight along the back. Paint the beak and the legs a warm yellow-orange and the comb a deep red; both these patches are tiny, but it is they that make the figure readable from a distance.
