Stencils for the arctic splinter finish of the F/A-18 naval aircraft in the role of the opponent. Prepared for 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Hornet in the rendering that represents foreign machines wears a finish assembled from sharply bounded wedges. The pattern comes from training schemes used over the northern regions, where the machine is meant to be lost against snow, ice and low cloud. Light and darker cold tones alternate in narrow fields and deliberately break up the outlines of the airframe.
The wedges are nowhere the same. They change width, converge into points and some of them cross the edges of the leading parts, so they break across several surfaces at once. And the model is not a smooth board: the stencil has to fit between protruding posts and transitions, which with hand trimming means a great deal of small recalculation.
The surface underneath plays its part here. Carrier machines have a surface strewn with hatches and seams around the arrestor hook and the folding wing, and the boundaries of the fields cut across them without regard. It is exactly this mismatch that makes the finish lively, and it is not meant to be smoothed over.
Proceeding from light to dark is the proven way. First the surface is evened out, then after it has dried completely the first group of parts is stuck on and the second tone is sprayed. Before you move on to the next level, check the edge with a fingernail through a glove: if it is lifting anywhere, press it down again.
Lay on rather less paint and more times. An excessive layer under a sharp angle creates a ridge that stays palpable once the mask comes off and ruins the impression of a smooth transition between the fields.
The package consists only of the cut shapes themselves, without paints and without the aircraft kit.
