A photo-etched set of brass sheet in 1:48 scale from the Czech brand Eduard. It is not a model of an airplane but an accessory for a plastic kit of the Lancaster already purchased. The name places it at the bomb bay, that is at the place that on this machine is open and draws the eye. Thin sheet makes it possible to create ribs, frames and flanges there in a convincing thickness that molded plastic cannot reach.
The Lancaster carried its bomb load in an unusually long bomb bay running almost the length of the fuselage, which made it the most versatile British bomber of the war. The machines of No. 617 Squadron modified for the attack on the German dams in the Ruhr in May 1943, however, had the bomb bay handled differently: they carried Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb slung outside the fuselage and their bomb bay doors were taken away. The underside of the fuselage on these aircraft therefore looks different from that of an ordinary Lancaster.
Try the larger assemblies dry in the plastic first. Photo-etched parts have no play and will not seat if an opening is even a tenth of a millimeter too small, so it pays to widen the plastic carefully in advance. Separate the parts with a scalpel on glass or on a cutting mat, and make the bends along the marked grooves. They are bonded with super glue in a minimal amount or with two-part epoxy, which gives time to line them up.
