About product

Bardney and No. 9 Squadron

No. 9 Squadron of the Royal Air Force was among the oldest units of Bomber Command and from the fall of 1943 it flew Lancasters from the airfield of Bardney in Lincolnshire. It carried the code letters WS and became known for taking part in repeated attacks on a battleship moored in the Norwegian fjords, in which it dropped bombs weighing five and a half tons. Besides that it flew hundreds of ordinary night raids over the Ruhr and Berlin.

What the sheet covers

The sheet in 1:48 scale carries the markings of two machines of this squadron. One of them has the serial number LM453 and wears the individual letter E; the second flew as LL845 with the letter L and had a figure painted on the nose with the name Lonesome Lola. Squadron codes, individual letters and serial numbers are included, that is everything that sets one particular example apart from hundreds of otherwise identical aircraft.

Avro Lancaster B.I and B.III

The two versions differed almost not at all from the outside. The difference was under the cowlings: one had engines of British manufacture, the other licensed units built in America. A modeler can therefore use the sheet on both forms; he only has to watch the shape of the exhausts and propeller blades according to the kit chosen.

Application

The fuselage of the Lancaster is long and the code letters take up a large area, so lay the pieces on a damp base and move them with a brush while the position can still be adjusted. Only then soak the excess water off.

The serial numbers on the rear fuselage are small and easily turned over. It pays to separate them last, when the modeler's hand is already steady from the larger pieces.
