A sheet of waterslide decals from the British manufacturer Xtradecal in 1:48 scale with the markings of Royal Air Force machines from the period of the Battle of Britain, that is the air campaign over the British Isles in 1940. The sheet is an accessory for a kit and is not a model in itself. The extent of the markings is shown by what the manufacturer gives on the packaging of the sheet and the instructions supplied.
Sheets themed on a single period make it possible to build a coherent group of models with the same graphic handwriting in their markings. They are also useful when a kit offers only one or two schemes and you want a machine in different markings, or when you need to replace decals from an older box that are no longer usable.
Aircraft of this period wear dark upper camouflage, and it is precisely on a saturated base that how well a decal covers becomes clear. Light markings may show through on a dark finish and shift in color. Try the decal out first, therefore, on a piece of scrap plastic painted in the same shade. If it shows through, stick a second copy of the same marking underneath it, or spray a small white backing under the place of application, slightly smaller than the print itself. Without a trial you only find out on the finished model, when the repair is costly.
