A resin accessory set in 1:48 scale for a model of the British Harrier. It is not an aircraft kit but a set of parts with which you add 190 gallon drop tanks and wing tip extensions, the so-called ferry tips, to a model already built or under construction. The base kit of the aircraft has to be obtained separately.
The real subject
The Harrier was the first combat aircraft in series service with vertical and short takeoff. For operating from improvised sites and from a deck that was an enormous advantage, but at the cost of a small internal fuel load. For long-distance transits the aircraft was therefore rigged differently from a combat sortie: larger drop tanks went under the wing and extensions were fitted to the wing tips, which increased the span and the aspect ratio of the wing and improved endurance in level flight. In combat configuration they were taken off again, because they worsened agility.
Building and painting tips
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, otherwise the primer will not adhere. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, level the surface on a board with abrasive paper and sand with respiratory protection. Bond the tanks and the extensions with super glue and try the position dry before fixing them, above all the alignment of the tanks with the fuselage and the symmetry of the two wing tips. Fill and sand the transition between the part and the plastic before spraying, so that no seam shows. In color the tanks and the extensions go with the camouflage scheme of the aircraft, so it is most sensible to spray them at the same time as the airframe.
