About product

1:48 British armored vehicle crew helmet, the detail variant

A modeling accessory of its own in 1:48 scale: a casting of the British helmet for armored vehicle crews. It is an accessory for figures, not a kit or a finished figure. The accessory is marked as the detail variant; the manufacturer makes the same helmet without this designation as well, so go by the full wording of the name.

The real subject

The helmet of an armored vehicle crew solves a different task from an infantry one: it protects the head above all against knocks in a cramped fighting compartment, and that is why it has a smaller and more compact shell with no wide brim that would get in the way in a hatch. On a model the difference shows clearly, so a figure of a tank crewman in an infantry helmet looks wrong at once. The 1:48 scale is popular with British vehicles precisely because the model takes up less room and the details of the crew are legible on it all the same.

Building and painting tips

The casting is very small at this scale, so separate it from the casting block with a saw or a sharp knife and work over a surface where the part is easy to find again. Wash a resin casting in lukewarm water with detergent before painting and glue it with cyanoacrylate glue; a plastic one is joined with ordinary modeling cement. Wet-sand and do so with respiratory protection. After the primer apply the paint only in very weak coats, otherwise you will flood the shape. A light dark wash and fine drybrushing of the edges will pull the detail out; finish the surface with a matte varnish. Paint it before setting it on the figure.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of British armored vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who alter figures of crews
  • Diorama builders filling a scene out with equipment set down
  • More experienced modelers used to very small castings

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The figure, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They are two versions of the same helmet. Check the particular difference on the box or in the manufacturer's catalog and go by the full wording of the name.

It is not. It is a casting of a single object, that is an accessory for figures. A figure has to be bought separately.

Use tweezers, a sharp knife or a fine saw and work over a surface where the part is easy to find again. Apply the paint in very weak coats.
