Masking set 1:48 CH-53 GS/G - rotor blades

A specialized set of pre-cut masks of kabuki tape, intended for painting the rotor blades of a model of the CH-53 heavy transport helicopter in the G and GS versions in 1:48 scale. It is not a set for the canopy glazing and not a kit - it is a narrowly focused accessory for one particular task during painting.

Why the rotor blades in particular

The blades of the main rotor are long narrow surfaces that usually carry colored fields and stripes. It is exactly there that hand masking works worst: tape is hard to align on a narrow blade, the edge wanders and any asymmetry between the individual blades shows immediately on a finished model, because several identical parts sit side by side. A pre-cut mask gives all the blades the same shape and spacing and saves repeated measuring.

How to proceed

• Spray the blades in the base shade first and let the paint cure.
• Lay the mask on a dry, clean and degreased surface.
• Press the edges down along their whole length; on a long part a section is easily missed.
• Spray the contrasting shade thinly, so that no palpable step forms at the edge.
• Take the mask off shortly after drying and check the edge straight away.
• Let the blades cure before handling them - fresh paint takes an imprint.
