About product

1:48 Challenger 2 in Its Desert Form, a Tamiya Kit

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Challenger 2 main battle tank in 1:48 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Tamiya. The designation Desertised refers to the desert form of the vehicle, that is to the version adapted for operating in hot, dusty surroundings. For Tamiya's ground hardware, 1:48 is a series of its own: the model is smaller than the usual 1:35, but all the easier to place in a display case or in a smaller scene.

The real subject

The Challenger 2 is a British main battle tank with a crew of four, armed with a 120 mm gun with a rifled barrel, in which it is the exception among Western tanks of its generation, the others having gone over to a smoothbore. Power comes from a turbocharged diesel engine and protection from multi-layer composite armor. On the vehicles, the desert form showed above all in additional features connected with cooling, with filtering the intake air and with the equipment carried on the hull, which gives the model its characteristically broken-up look.

Building and painting tips

Proceed in the classic way: finish the running gear and the internal parts before you close the hull, because afterward you will not reach them again. Apply a thin polystyrene cement into the seam and let it wick in by capillary action; the joint will be cleaner than if it were applied over the surface. Apply a primer before painting, especially under the light desert shades, which cover poorly without a base. An airbrush is an advantage on the large smooth areas of the hull. Build the weathering up in layers: a darker wash into the recesses and around the rivets, then dust pigment on the lower areas and the running gear. With desert hardware the rule is that less is more: the dust has to be visible on the model, but it must not cover the base color.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers of modern ground hardware who want a smaller format than the usual 1:35
  • For collectors of British armored hardware
  • For builders of scenes that need a tank in a more space-saving scale
  • For modelers with basic experience of building plastic kits

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
