Omask — 1:48 Bf 109 walkways, 5 x 50 mm (Oramask)

A masking set from the Czech brand Omask, cut from Oramask 810 masking film. It serves for spraying the walkways on the wing of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in 1:48 scale. The designation 5 x 50 mm comes from the manufacturer's listing and refers to the contents of the set; the manufacturer does not explain it further.

What walkways are

Walkways are marked anti-slip strips at the wing root. The wing skin is thin and carries aerodynamic loads, not human weight — stepping in the wrong place means a dent. The walkway therefore shows the ground crew and the pilot where they may step: over the spar and the reinforced ribs. On the Bf 109 it ran along the wing root toward the cockpit.

Why spray it instead of using a decal

A walkway can be done with a decal too, but a decal has a carrier film — a transparent layer the ink sits on. That has an edge and a sheen of its own and on a flat clear coat it often shows up as silvering (microbubbles under the film create a grayish veil). A sprayed strip has no film, so it has no edge that could shine or silver — it is paint on paint and reads as part of the finish.

Use

• Stick the mask onto a dry, clean and degreased wing finish and press the edges down firmly.
• Spray thinly, perpendicular to the surface and in several coats — the paint then will not bleed under the edge of the mask.
• Lift the mask off with tweezers once the paint has flashed off, at a sharp angle away from the sprayed area.
• The shade and the way the walkways were marked differed between individual machines — follow the references for the version you are building.

Why not ordinary tape

Masking film has a low and controlled tack: it stays in place but does not pull off the underlying paint and leaves no adhesive residue once removed. The cut edge is sharp, so a clean transition results with no bleed. Ordinary tape sticks too hard, frays at the edge and leaves a sticky film.
