The fifth part of the Furball Aero-Design decal series for the carrier-based F-14 Tomcat fighter. The series is devoted to the colors and markings of US Navy machines and the individual parts follow on from each other without overlapping in content.
The appearance of the Tomcats changed more during their service than their hardware did. At first light finishes dominated, with colorful squadron markings, bold vertical tails and vivid emblems on the commanders' aircraft. Later came low-visibility schemes in several shades of gray, where even the national insignia lost its color and the lettering was left barely suggested. A model built to a particular period therefore looks completely different from a machine of another decade, even though it is the same type.
The large markings on the vertical tails are typical of this type and at the same time the hardest to lay down: the area is tall, slightly curved and the print ripples easily. Lay it onto plenty of water, line it up along the leading edge and only then push the air out from the center. Leave the small lettering until last and work with tweezers that have flat jaws, so that you do not dent the print.
What is sold is the decal sheet on its own. It does not replace a kit, paints or clear coats.
