A decal set in 1:48 scale from Art Scale, focused on the Curtiss Kittyhawk Mk.I machines of the Royal Australian Air Force in the Pacific. It is a separate accessory for modelers who want to mark their model differently from the sheet supplied in the kit. The box holds decals only; the model itself, the paints and the glue are not included.
The designation Kittyhawk Mk.I was carried by Commonwealth air forces for Curtiss P-40 machines of the D and E production batches. It was a single-engine all-metal fighter with a liquid-cooled Allison V12 engine, a characteristic squared radiator intake under the engine and a low-set wing with retractable landing gear. Compared with its contemporary opponents it did not excel in climb or high-altitude performance, but it was rugged, well armed and stood up to hard operation from field strips. That is exactly what made it the main type of the Australian fighter squadrons in 1942 and 1943, operating from improvised airfields in New Guinea and nearby, where it was used in both the fighter and the attack role.
Decals belong on a smooth gloss surface. Spray the painted model with gloss varnish first, otherwise air will be trapped under the film and a matte silvery rim will form around the edges. Dip the cut-out decal in lukewarm water for a few seconds and let it rest aside until the backing slides freely. Then slide it into place, adjust the position with a soft brush and blot the excess water away. To settle it over engraved lines, rivets and rounded transitions, use a decal softener and leave the finished joint undisturbed to dry. Finally, wash the surface clean of glue residue and seal the whole model with varnish in the sheen you have chosen.
The box holds decals only. The kit, paints, varnishes and decal softener are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
