A set of TFace masks for the glazing of a Curtiss Kittyhawk Mk.IV model in 1:48 scale, plotter-cut from kabuki paper.
Responsibility details are not available.
The designation Kittyhawk Mk.IV was carried in British and allied service by Curtiss P-40N machines. On this version the designers fought the weight: they cut back the armor, reduced the fuel load, fitted lighter wheels, and some airframes got only four machine guns instead of six. The reward was the highest rate of climb of the whole family. Mk.IVs flew over Italy, Burma and the South Pacific, and in 1943 and 1944 they formed the backbone of the fighter units of Australia and New Zealand.
The package consists of sheets of thin Japanese paper with pre-cut shapes. The dual TFace arrangement covers the canopy from both sides, so the inner framing can be sprayed in the cockpit shade and the camouflage finish can then continue on the outside without having to touch anything up with a brush.
Leave the clear parts in their bag until masking so that they do not get scuffed. Lay the mask onto a dry and degreased surface, press the edges down and only then spray. It works well to lay down a thin coat of the interior color first, which seals the edge, and to follow it with the camouflage itself.
The cut is derived from the parts of the Eduard kit in 1:48 scale, which the package does not contain.
For a collector the Mk.IV is also interesting for how many were built. Curtiss delivered the P-40N in greater numbers than any other version, over five thousand airframes in all, and built them until December 1944, when the line in Buffalo closed. By that time the machine was far from the front rank, but it was reliable, it stood up to rough handling at field airstrips and its sturdy landing gear forgave mistakes when setting down on a muddy surface. A model in 1:48 captures that solidity well.
